Cereals at high lodging risk, ADAS expert warns

FORWARD growth has put winter wheat and barley crops at high risk of lodging this season, an independent ADAS expert is warning, with possible weaknesses in stems and roots.
According to Dr Peter Berry, senior research consultant at ADAS High Mowthorpe in Yorkshire, a combination of early drilling and the mild autumn means many wheat and barley crops have been left with much bigger canopies than usual for this time of year.
Fire strikes Yorkshire machinery firm

THE shows will go on for Yorkshire machinery manufacturer Sumo (UK) Ltd after a recent fire at their Melbourne production plant.
Nine crews tackled the blaze which resulted in all four spray booths being destroyed. The roof of one of the three fabrication lines was also badly damaged.
Crucial survey for CFE needs record farmer support

FARMERS are being urged to reveal how they are protecting and enhancing the agricultural landscape before a major initiative is reviewed by the Government.
Today (February 20), a Campaign for the Farmed Environment (CFE) survey will be issued to 5500 randomly selected farmers across England to find out how much land is managed outside of paid agri-environment schemes.
Local events to update farmers on rural issues

SAVILLS is holding a breakfast seminar for farmers and landowners at Easton Estate, Manor Road, Grantham on Tuesday February 28 between 7.45-9.30am.
Experts will be on hand to discuss latest developments affecting landowners, including. Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform, farm land values and regulatory changes affecting rural businesses in the area.
Speakers include Paul Ainscough, Head of Savills Northern Rural team, who comments: “We aim to provide local landowners with a round up of developments currently facing rural businesses in the region. From updates on farm land values, to the latest thoughts on CAP reform, we hope the events will be an opportunity to analyse how new rural developments may affect local businesses, whilst providing the chance to network.”

Farmers can use red diesel to help during cold snap
10 February 2012.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) confirmed today that during extreme weather farmers can use red diesel in their tractors to help grit and clear snow from public roads.
Under normal rules any vehicle that is being used to clear snow from public roads using a snow plough or similar device is entitled to use red diesel. However, only vehicles that are constructed or adapted and used solely for spreading material on roads to deal with frost, ice and snow can undertake gritting work while using red diesel.
Scottish celebration for RABI

THE Nottinghamshire RABI fundraising committee held a Burns night supper on 28th January 2012 to raise funds to support farming families across Nottinghamshire.
Hosted by fellow committee member Robert Bower, who took pride in getting dressed up for the occasion with full Scottish dress, entertained guests with jokes and tales before blessing the Haggis and serving to guests.
Soil and water experts line up for practical event

SOIL fertility and tillage systems, controlled traffic farming, abstraction licensing issues and improving irrigation efficiency, are some of the practical topics to be explored at a new East Anglian technical event – Soil Water and Precision Management − at Easton College.
Organised by the Centre for Contemporary Agriculture, this practical event on March 15 is grant funded by LandSkills East and is free for farmers and others to attend.
