Regular readers will recall that when Chas Baird interviewed riding school owner Ray Whitby in September 09, he also had a go at riding. A couple of weeks later he went back and tried again
and made the decision that he was going to learn properly!
Chas takes up the story.
After one particularly good lesson on 'Humphrey' – and a slightly sarcastic remark from one of my shooting chums! – I decided that I would work towards being a sufficiently competent rider to go hunting on Boxing Day 2010. Most of my friends thought it was madness and there were a few raised eyebrows from some of the non-shooting/fishing crew!..

HUNDREDS of tractors are being stolen each year, the latest target of highly organised criminal gangs.
Virtually all rural areas of the UK are affected and the value of stolen tractors and other farm equipment is now over a staggering £3-million a year. These are rich and easy pickings – with second-hand tractors commanding prices anywhere between £50,000 and £100,000 each. And tractors are relatively easy to steal because ignition keys are standard and can usually start any vehicle.

MThis month Mark Harwood Stone downsizes to a small commercial which could provide an economical alternative as a practical rural runabout.
No, this isn’t a review of an animated fish-based cartoon; instead an evaluation of one of the more interesting small vans currently available. You can buy the Nemo under another name and brand but in keeping with Citroen’s reputation for offering the unusual; this award-winning light commercial comes complete with an interesting quirk. Normally reserved for more sporting vehicles, Citroen have elected to fit this model with SensoDrive, a combined fully automatic and manual sequential five-speed clutchless gearbox...

A RECORD flock of corn buntings has roosted on a wildlife-friendly farm in Bedfordshire during the recent cold weather.
The farm in the village of Stotfold has 700 corn buntings in one field.
RSPB experts are working with farmer Steve Bumstead to find out what has attracted so many of the endangered songbirds.

WITH the country still in recession and rural crime figures rising, modern technology has come to the aid of vulnerable rural sites.
As well as stealing cars, mobile phones and purses, more and more thieves are targeting fisheries and farms for their easily sold on stock as well as diesel and any saleable plant and machinery.
RapidGuard could be seen as a solution to this quandary. It consists of sophisticated yet simple-to-use motion detectors. These detectors are easily mounted and can be set to monitor any area. When one of the detectors senses motion, it alarms back to the main control box or alternatively sends a text message to a mobile phone, so preventative action can be taken immediately...
